One Bedroom, Three Layouts: Which One Would You Choose?

Picture an empty bedroom. Warm marble-finish flooring, a cove-lit false ceiling, a tall window along one wall and a wooden door on the other. It's a lovely shell, but right now it's just four walls and a lot of possibility.

Now imagine it's yours. Where does the bed go? Where do you work? Where do your clothes live?

That's the question we asked in our latest reel, and it's one we hear from almost every client who walks into our studio. The same room, with the same furniture, can feel calm and spacious or awkward and cramped depending entirely on the layout. So we designed it three ways.

The three options

Option 1: The corner bed. The bed sits off to one side near the door wall, with the wardrobe running across the back wall and a study desk by the window. It looks relaxed at first glance, but the bed floats without a strong anchor, and the room's natural focal point, the back wall, ends up going to storage.

Option 2: The centred bed. The bed is placed squarely against the solid back wall, framed by a panelled headboard, two bedside lamps and a pair of art prints. The study desk sits right beside the window, and a full-height wardrobe is tucked against the wall near the door.

Option 3: The window-side bed. The bed is pushed toward the window wall, a low dresser takes the back wall, and the study desk is squeezed into the corner by the wardrobe and door. It keeps the centre of the room open, but the desk loses its daylight and the bed sits close to the glass.

Before reading on, take a second and pick one. That's what we asked our viewers to do in the comments, too.

The answer: Option 2

Option 2 is the best layout for this room, and it comes down to three simple principles that apply to almost any bedroom.

1. The bed belongs against a solid wall

In Option 2, the bed is positioned against a solid wall, creating a comfortable and well-balanced sleeping space. A solid wall behind the headboard gives a sense of security and stability, keeps you away from window drafts and street-side glare, and lets you place matching bedside tables on both sides. The symmetry isn't just for looks. It makes the bed the natural, calm focal point of the room.

2. The study table follows the light

The study table is placed next to the window, making the most of natural light during the day. If you work or study from your bedroom, daylight is the single best upgrade you can give your desk. It reduces eye strain, cuts down on daytime electricity use and simply makes the space more pleasant to sit in. In Options 1 and 3, the desk either competes with other furniture or ends up in a dim corner.

3. The room divides itself into zones

Most importantly, the room is naturally divided into three functional zones: sleep, work and storage. The bed occupies the centre, the desk claims the window side, and the wardrobe sits by the door where you enter and change. Each activity has its own space, nothing overlaps, and you can move through the room without weaving around furniture. That clarity is what makes a bedroom feel restful rather than busy.

What this means for your home

You don't need a bigger room to get a better bedroom. Often, you just need a smarter arrangement. When you're planning your own space, ask three questions:

  • Is my bed against a solid wall, with room on both sides?
  • Does my workspace get natural light?
  • Can I point to a clear zone for sleeping, working and storing?

If the answer to all three is yes, you're most of the way to a room that works.

Make every corner work beautifully

At Shomli Interiors, that's the idea behind every space we design: every corner should have a purpose, and every purpose should look good. If you're planning a new home or rethinking a room that never quite felt right, we'd love to help you find the layout that fits the way you live.
